Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) organized a discussion meeting sector-wise with the specialized trade association for keeping prices of essentials stable during the upcoming Ramadan on 10 July, 2012 at DCCI. Chairman of Bangladesh Tariff Commission and Secretary to the government Dr. Md. Mozibur Rahman was present as the chief guest while President of FBCCI A. K. Azad and Director General of National Consumers' Rights Protection Directorate Md. Abul Hossain Mian were present as special guests.
DCCI President Asif Ibrahim in his address of welcome said that price hike of energy, power and gas, increased transportation cost due to traffic congestion, tendency to make extra profit by the middle-men, high bank interest rate, lack of information regarding food stock, mismanagement in preservation, lack of skill and transparency are some of the main reasons for price spiral of essentials. He stressed on implementing strong market monitoring system, strengthening TCB and proper implementation of consumers' rights protection act. He also urged on preventing extortion in highway transportation, establishing sales centre under government's control and ensuring proper distribution system. DCCI President underscored the importance of hanging price list in the market.
Chairman of Bangladesh Tariff Commission and Secretary to the government Dr. Md. Mozibur Rahman called upon all business people not to be too much profit mongering. He also informed that stocks of all essential items are adequate now in our country. He said that government will ensure packaging of all essential consumer products gradually. He called upon the businessmen to cooperate with government to stabilize prices of essentials.
FBCCI President A. K. Azad stressed on preventing mixing formalin in fruits, extortion in transportation sector, strengthening market monitoring system and reducing bank interest rate in importing agricultural items. He also said that there is no possibility of price spiral as there are adequate stocks of essentials in the country.
Director General of National Consumers' Rights Protection Directorate Md. Abul Hossain Mian said that required manpower will be recruited in the Consumer Rights Protection Office soon. He also informed that Consumer Rights Protection Directorate will open its offices in the district level gradually. He stressed on creating awareness about consumers' rights protection act and its proper implementation. He sought cooperation of business community in providing proper service to the society.

Babul and representative of fruits importers association Shadhon Chandra Das and President of Small and Medium Enterprise Association Ali Zaman took part in the open discussion.
